A Lot of Castle themed minifigs have pre-printed armor right on their torsos. Some minifigs came with separate armor pieces. These were always popular with castle fans, much preferred over preprinted armor. Below are the types of armors available and in which sets they can be found.

Made for a few years in the early 90s in Dark Grey, this "Classic" armor has been reissued in Light Grey in a $90 Harry Potter set #4709 with a really cool shield. This armor can be found in the following sets:
4709 (year 2001), 6009 (year 1992), 6034 (year 1990), 6042 (year 1990), 6059 (year 1990), 6081 (year 1990), 6086 (year 1992)
Originally introduced in 1996 for the Pirates Imperial Armada Subtheme. This silver/chrome plated piece also appeared in the Knight's Kingdom set 4817 which had limited availability. This armor can be found in the following sets:
4817 (year 2000), 6204 (year 1997), 6280 (year 1996), 6281 (year 1997), 6291 (year 2001 rerelease of 6280)
Introduced in 1999 with the Ninja line of sets. This piece is most commonly available in Dark Grey. It was produced in Black for set 3344 (available only from LEGO outlets). This armor can be found in the following sets:
1186 (same as 3018), 3050, 3053, 3077, 3344, 4805, 6013, 6083, 6089, 6093
